Alex and Michael told to ‘stop’ by emotional Nadiya Hussain: ‘Didn’t come here to cry’

The One Show has seen multiple guest hosts join regular star Alex Jones in the hot seat in recent months and once again, Michael Ball was on the famous sofas alongside her. The hosts were joined by previous GBBO winner Nadiya Hussain, who has been baking for key workers throughout the lockdown period but the star was left touched after some kind words from fans this evening, which led her to ask the pair to “stop” what they were doing.

Nadiya openly spoke out about her experiences during lockdown and how she has coped before being given some lovely messages from One Show viewers.

However, the flurry of compliments left Nadiya close to tears while she sat down with the duo in the studio.

Michael told her: “This is lovely from Liz, who got in touch to say she suffers from anxiety and depression and panic attacks – something you’ve been talking about.

“She thinks you’re fantastic Nadiya because you shine a light on this topic,” he said.

He proceeded to read out the comment, continuing: “The way Nadiya continues to challenge things is an inspiration to me and I sometimes tell myself, ‘Be more Nadiya.’”

Nadiya was left overwhelmed by the compliment, quickly responding: “Aw, that’s so… be more you, always be more you!”

She added: “That’s so sweet, oh my goodness.”

She went on to ask the pair to refrain from reading any more messages, saying: “Oh stop! I did not here to cry!”

She continued: “This is what baking does, it’s pretty special and I think we’ve all had the opportunity to step down and say, ‘You know what? What it is that allows us to focus and just be who we are?’ It’s a wonderful thing.”

The star also detailed what she had been up to during lockdown, explaining how she had been enjoying camping in the garden.

Nadiya told the hosts: “Yeah. I like camping, we just camped in the garden.”

“Come on, you snuck indoors and had a shower!” Michael joked.

Nadiya replied: “Only for a cup of tea! It was nice to be just close to the house and do something, a nice change.”

The famous baker also opened up about how she had got into baking in the first place after Alex quizzed her on the topic.

Host Alex admitted she was surprised to find out from Nadiya’s new book that she had not been baking for as long as she thought.

Alex said: “I assumed you were someone who baked from a very young age!” with the pair going onto talk about Nadiya’s husband who “inspired” the move.

The baker said she had recently celebrated her 15th-anniversary with her husband, which led Alex to remark: “Congratulations, especially after lockdown… I’m saying nothing!”

Later on, the trio had another famous face on the line, in the form of comedian Jimmy Carr.

He even showed off a baking creation of his own and spoke out about how his fellow guest had inspired him to have a go at the popular lockdown activity.

However, he did admit he had a few difficulties and had accidentally iced the cake while it was still warm, making for a slightly messy finish.

Michael was not impressed with Jimmy’s cake and bluntly told him: “That looks awful, Jimmy!”
