Aldi could quadruple its number of stores by opening up to EIGHT in some UK towns

The rapidly expanding discount supermarket opened its 700th store in February, but has now revealed plans it will be opening hundreds more, focusing on UK towns.

Speaking about Aldi’s big plans, chief executive of Aldi, Matthew Barnes, told The Grocer: “I think there is massively more potential than that.

“If you look at the population, we think not only could we have a store in every town and city, but for every 25,000 to 30,000 people.”

With the UK’s population standing at 65 million that would equate to 2,600 stores across the country.

Supermarket giant Tesco currently has around 2,700 stores, while Asda has just 525.

Matthew added: “We have 700 stores now and 300 sites already approved on our books. And there are 600 town locations where we don’t have a store, in many of which we could easily have tow, three or four stores.

“We don’t have a store in Watford, [but] that would be a six to eight Aldi town.”

Aldi was founded by Anna Albrecht in 1913 as a small food store in the mining town of Essen, Germany, under the name of ‘Albrecht Discount’.

There’s nothing like a motivational playlist during a workout, and the Shape Up for Summer range has a Bluetooth Sports Headset priced at £9.99 on offer.

With the ability to stream music wirelessly from Bluetooth enabled devices, the headset has a 10 metre operating range so users can listen to their favourite tunes without wires getting in the way.

It’s also water resistant so there’s no need to worry if the weather takes a turn for the worse while out on a run.

The new ranges are available in store and online from 14th May, while stocks last.
