‘Absolute scenes’: Malawi’s incredible NZ upset

MALAWI have produced the greatest upset in Commonwealth Games netball history with a 57-53 win over New Zealand on the Gold Coast tonight.

The Silver Ferns have made all five of netball’s gold medal games since the sport was introduced in Kuala Lumpur in 1998, winning in 2006 and 2010, but they are on decidedly shaky ground now.

They can still make the final but are not playing well enough to challenge the likes of Australia and England.

New Zealand were unimpressive in beating Uganda and Wales in their opening pool matches but looked switched on in the first term, leading Malawi 18-11 at the first break.

They maintained the seven-goal buffer up to halftime but Malawi exploded in the third quarter to outscore the Silver Ferns 17-9.

They went on with the job in the last term to claim the stunning victory.

Mwai Kumwenda was the star for Malawi with 41 goals.
