The interview was going well until host Eamonn Holmes started questioning the A-lister, 61, about the damming allegations circling disgraced Hollywood executive Harvey Weinstein.
Audience members quickly took to social media to hit out at the uncomfortable scenes with one person posting on Twitter: “How awkward #ChristophWaltz #ThisMorning.”
Another posted: “Wow, this is an awkward interview with Christoph Waltz on #ThisMorning.”
“I like this guys accent… I also think he’s not impressed by the questions #thismorning,” a third added.
A fourth person tweeted: “Such an awkward interview. Why should he be answering questions about Weinstein?? #ThisMorning.”
Someone else found Eamonn, 57, and Ruth Langsford’s line of interviewing “disrespectful” and expressed their anger on social media.
“Christoph Waltz is a huge deal in Gemany. For them to just say “you’ve not long made it big” was an insult. #ThisMorning,” raged the audience member.
However, others agreed with the line of questioning as one audience member said: “For those saying #ThisMorning shouldn’t have asked Christoph Waltz about Weinstein; it’s Hollywood’s biggest story & he is a member of Hollywood.”
During the interview, Eamonn asked: “Talking about casting, what do you make of this Harvey Weinstein situation? Is it that something you guys are aware of in the industry?”
Actor Christoph seemed uncomfortable, replying: “Of course, are you kidding? How can you not be? I consider this something I don’t need to contribute my two cents’ worth.
“The situation, I think, is more than blatantly obvious. Anybody in their right mind would be repulsed by it – the behaviour – so if the thing speaks for itself why should I add a voice?”
But Eamonn pressed him further: “No, what I’m saying is: was there an awareness in the industry? Was he talked about for a period of time?”
“He was one of the biggest players,” Christoph replied as Eamonn went on to say: “Did people know what his habits were?”
The Oscar winner was seemingly not impressed: “Look, you’re asking the wrong person… and I’m an old geezer.”
Sensing the tension, Ruth, 57, moved on the conversation: “Interesting to see where that one goes.”
This Morning airs weekdays on ITV at 10.30am.
