Boiler central heating: Installing THIS £39 item could save you a third on your gas bill

Boiler costs and central heating bills can become expensive in wintertime, but save during this cold spell by installing a simple ceiling fan.

Installing one of these fans in your home can save you as much 30 per cent on your heating bill, according to research from Lights.co.uk.

Typically, ceiling fans are used for generating a cool breeze during the summer.

However, many do not realise they can equally be used to circulate warm air in your home during the winter.

As a result, you won’t have to crank up the thermostat – and you will save money on your heating bill.

All you have to do is use the ceiling fan in the reverse function (counter clockwise) rather than the forward function.

This pushes the warm air – which naturally rises towards the ceiling – back down into the room.

As a result, the heat from your central heating system will circulate around the room much more efficiently.

Ceilings fans can be found for as little as £39 on sites such as eBay, or for upwards of £50 on Lights.co.uk.

They are available in a range of different models and colours, and you can choose between options with or without integrated lights.

Given that the average UK annual gas bill is an eye watering £752, according to research from OVO Energy, this may well be a worthy investment.

Yesterday, it was revealed what temperature a house should be: 21 degrees Celsius, according to a government study.

Despite this, the average UK home is just 17.7 degrees Celsius, which is considerably colder.

It has also been asked whether it is cheaper to leave central heating on all the time or to turn it on and off.

Sadly for some, Caitlin Bent – an energy expert at the Energy Saving Trust (EST), isn’t buying the “keep it on” philosophy.

“It’s a common myth that leaving the heating on low all day will help you save energy,” she told The Sun.

”In reality, it’s best to use a timer or programmer to make sure your home is only heated when you’re there.”
