The brand new series of ITV’s Unforgotten got off to a harrowing start last week.
Season three sees DCI Cassie Stuart (played by Nicola Walker) and DI Sunny Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar) investigating a cold case that’s almost 20 years old.
When the body of a missing teenager is found, the two become embroiled in the lives of four suspects.
Episode one left viewed in tears as the body found turned out to be that of 16-year-old Hayley Reid who went missing on New Year’s Eve in 1991.
In a tragic scene, Hayley’s sister Jessica (Bronagh Waugh) was notified by police that her sister’s remains had been found.
A group of four men, who have been close friends for years, will now be placed under the spotlight as part of the investigation into Hayley’s disappearance.
Alex Jennings, Kevin R McNally, Neil Morrissey and James Fleet play the friends whose lives are to be intricately explored and their friendship pushed to the limit as the series progresses.
Episode two will see their characters brought into the investigation.
What will happen in Unforgotten series 3, episode 2?
The official synopsis from ITV for the second episode reads: “Cassie, Sunny and the team travel to Middenham to meet Hayley’s parents and twin sister, Jessica.
“The press are already circling in the area and it’s clear that unearthing Hayley’s body will bring the whole investigation back into the media spotlight.
“The team meet retired DCI John Bentley (Alastair Mackenzie) who was an officer on the original case.
“He provides information about the investigation and reveals that he believes it was flawed from the start.
“He tells them that Hayley’s boyfriend at the time, Adrian Mullery (Gerald Kyd), was their prime suspect, but he was never charged.
“After a walk around the local area, Cassie develops a theory that as Hayley’s body was found so far from where she disappeared, the murderer could have travelled from London.
“As a result, the team begin to look at the numerous holiday rentals in the vicinity and who they were let by on the night that Hayley went missing.”
The Crown star Alex Jennings plays one of the men, Dr Tim Finch.
Speaking about his role in the series, Jennings said: “As the investigation proceeds, the team find out who the victim was – a young girl who disappeared at the turn of the millennium.
“Around that time and in that neighbourhood, it transpires that four families were on holiday together.”
He added: “These four families are brought into the investigation because of their proximity to the place where this girl disappeared.
“My character is the father of one of these families.”
Unforgotten series 3 airs on ITV on Sundays at 9pm
