It may appear the future of the inhabitants will be determined by mass-murderer Alpha (played by Samantha Morton), however it has been teased that Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt) and his radio may be the key to their futures.
This is the case in the comics as Eugene finally makes contact with other settlements.
Now, The Walking Dead season nine final episode promotional pictures have hinted the radio is back and may well play a big part in the finale.
Executive producer Denise Huth has teased fans should watch out for the radio: “Fans of the comics probably know that that is a storyline directly from the comics.
“There is a big story with the radio. I like how we have chosen to introduce it.”
Will the radio help rescue the survivors in the season finale and save them from the wrath of Alpha?
The radio was introduced in episode six and was seen again in the most recent episode as Eugene and Rosita (Christian Serratos) attempted to contact other survivors.
The producer also teased to Digital Spy: “I don’t know if it’s overly significant [in the season finale] but it’s one of the great things that we get to do sometimes – which is sort of feature it for a moment and it’s not a big deal then, but perhaps it will be a big deal later.”
Maybe she is suggesting the radio will have a huge impact in season ten after being teased in season nine?
It would not be the first time that a comic storyline has been shelved and then returned with a bang later on in the series.
She added: “To me, it’s just a great symbol of hope.”
The radio opens the show up to greater possibilities and could be the reason why survivors are eventually reunited.
The comic storyline includes Eugene making contact with a new character called Stephanie who indicates she is from a settlement which is part of the Commonwealth.
One theory on how the radio will play a huge part in the future of the series is if Eugene managed to make contact with the departed Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln).
Rick did not die when he left the show and this leaves his return open for the future. What if he returns over the airwaves as Eugene makes contact with him?
The former Sheriff travelled to a settlement that has its own radio system and fans know this from when they delivered the helicopter to The Junkyard.
Fans were sent into meltdown over the possibility with one Twitter user saying: “If we hear Rick on the radio on Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead I will die of excitement.”
Another went even further: “I have a theory for the season finale of The Walking Dead which would, in my opinion, save the show and hype the move big time. Eugene using the radio makes contact with someone, and on the other end we hear Rick’s voice saying, ‘hello my name is Rick Grimes, I’m looking for my family.’”
Fans will have to wait to find out if Rick makes a dramatic return and if the radio holds the key to the future of the series.
