What was Leonard trying to achieve with Vanya on The Umbrella Academy?
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from The Umbrella Academy on Netflix.
The Umbrella Academy viewers were introduced to Leonard Peabody in the second episode of the Netflix series.
Leonard was a student of Vanya’s as he underwent violin lessons.
It didn’t take long for Leonard to worm his way into Vanya’s life, spotting her vulnerability thanks to her frayed relationship with her adoptive siblings.
Leonard and Vanya’s romance intensified and, bit by bit, he began to try and turn her against the other members of the Academy.
He knew Vanya had a secret power like her brothers and sisters, even though her father Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) had told her she was normal.
Magaro’s character set out to try and get Vanya to unleash her powers, however, it was revealed his backstory meant he had ulterior motives.
The Umbrella Academy: Leonard Peabody/Harold Jenkins
Leonard was revealed to be Harold Jenkins, a former superfan of the Academy who was born on the same day as the seven adopted children.
Harold was keen to escape his violent home as a child and become a member of The Umbrella Academy.
When Reginald refused Harold an audience as a child, the superfan went home and brutally murdered his violent father in a fit of rage.
Now, as an adult, he sought vengeance on the Hargreeves family who had rejected him.
While his motive for infiltrating the Academy was clear, his intentions for Vanya were not.
And Harold wasn’t able to fulfil any plan he had after Vanya’s overbearing powers killed him in a moment on uncontrollable fury.
Despite his death, The Umbrella Academy fans have found themselves debating what Leonard hoped for online.
The Umbrella Academy: Vanya Hargreeves
Taking to online forum website Reddit, one fan asked: “What was Leonard trying to accomplish?”
It didn’t take long for fans of the Gerard Way-created series to offer their own answers.
One fan said: “Maybe he wanted it to be more personal like getting the Academy to turn on each other starting with Vanya. I remember him repeatedly saying that the academy won’t forgive Vanya and they want to kill her.”
A second fan of the show commented: “Didn’t he want the UA to implode on itself? Killing them wouldn’t be enough for him, I guess. They all had to squabble and destroy each other, which would be delicious irony for him because they were shown as this awesome family of supers before.
“They were better than him and rejected him, and he probably wanted to prove that they weren’t better than him because they would kill their family too (like him).”
A third theory put forward reads: “When he got out of prison and eventually found Reginald’s notes he realised he could get Vanya to kill them all for him. That’s why the eyes are scratched out in the pictures and why he visibly smiles when they think Vanya killed Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman).”
The Umbrella Academy: Harold and Vanya
Harold’s true intentions weren’t revealed in the comic-book series either.
However, Gerard Way and showrunner Steve Blackman have spoken out about other questions to arise from the Netflix series.
The pair dropped a major hint season two was on the way as well multiple other series.
Should season two be confirmed, it’s likely all members of The Umbrella Academy would return.
The Umbrella Academy: Vanya
A number of other The Umbrella Academy stars could make comebacks in season two, both in flashback or the present day.
The Umbrella Academy is available to stream now on Netflix.
