The Radio One star joined Viscountess Emma Weymouth, 33, and her professional partner Aljaž Škorjanec, 29, to face the dreaded dance off.

After performing their routines from Saturday night again, all four judge decided to unanimously send home Dev and Dianne.

Whereas the eliminated contestant said he was “gutted” to have been voted out, the Australian ballroom dancer was left in floods of tears over the shock result.

Having blown the judges away with is performance during the fourth live show of the series as well as defying the odds, Mike spoke out about his co-star’s exit during an interview with BBC Breakfast this morning.

Strictly Come Dancing 2019: Dev Griffin and Dianne Buswell devastated

Speaking from a village hall in Basingstoke, the sports reporter said of the result: “There was definite real shock.

“There’s always great sadness when one of you goes because you become such a close knit family.

“We’re not really competing with each other to be honest, we’re competing against ourselves to better our own performances.

“Dev is a brilliant dancer and they did some fantastic performances, especially last week with Aladdin. So to lose Dev and Dianne was a real shock and there was general numbness really this had happened,” the Strictly star opined.

Going on to explain why Dev and Dianne found themselves in such a position, the sports presenter summarised the judges scores form Saturday night could have been a big part to play in the result.

Mike explained: “I think it was a week of very high scores, it think the lowest score was 23.

“Dev and Dianne got 27 and so really, everybody was in potential jeopardy and somebody said to me with the scoring, the public voting – because the judges count for half and then it’s all about the public vote, if you were at the very bottom of the leaderboard – I think was Alex and Neil – sometimes that can almost galvanise the public vote and then maybe you get some people voting to try and save you.

“But if you’re in the middle or slightly higher up, and this is not mentioning anybody in particular, this is just how it can work sometimes,” the amateur dancer added.

Continuing his sentiment, Mike commented: “It maybe means the voters are resting their laurels a little bit thinking ‘they’ll be safe, let’s try and help the couples at the bottom’.

“And then suddenly those couples just above that bottom area in the mid-table can be in jeopardy. And maybe that’s the sort of thing that happened.”

Earlier in the interview, Mike recalled one of his fellow competitors said to him they shocked the two of them were still striving to dance another week.

“Chris Ramsey actually said to me, ‘No disrespect Mike, but there’s us two dance dancers up here and one of the best dancers Dev is going home’.”

Concluding his interview, Mike expressed his amazement at the result, stating: “But a real shock to lose Dev and Dianne or indeed it would have been to lose Emma and Aljaž.”

Back in the BBC Breakfast studio, host Louise Minchin, 51, said: “You need to be voting for your favourite or things can happen.”

Dan Walker, 42, said of the remaining 12 celebrities still in the line-up: “Don’t get lost in the middle.”

Dianne Buswell spoke out about the result in an Instagram message this morning.

The professional dancer said her “heart was broken” after the result saw her and Dev eliminated from the BBC show.

Dianne shared a snap of herself with the BBC 1 DJ to her 810,000 followers and added: “This guy had so much to give and wprked sooooo hard.

“I’m so sorry your journey was cut short, you have done me so proud, every week you would say you just didn’t want to let me down!”

The eliminated stars will make their first appearance following the shock result on Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two this evening at 6.30pm on BBC Two.

Strictly Come Dancing 2019 continues Saturday at 6.40pm on BBC One.
