JJ Abrams may be back in the director’s chair to helm Star Wars Episode IX, but The Last Jedi’s Johnson has been handed a new trilogy.
No not Episodes X, XI and XII, but an entirely new storyline within the Star Wars universe.
Now in a new interview with Digital Spy, Johnson has revealed how he will approach his new trilogy.
The 44-year-old said: “I’m looking at everything [in Star Wars lore] right now.”
Johnson continued: “I’m honestly just in this very nice ‘OK, what is this thing going to be?’ phase.
“Really, the only goal I have is to think about how Star Wars made me feel as a kid. And that’s it.
“I’m trying to capture: what is that, if it’s not iconography that we recognise, necessarily, from the original trilogy?
“What captures that spirit? What can be that for a kid who’s never heard of Star Wars?”
The director said: “I knew intellectually what I was letting myself in for, but then when it happens you’re like, ‘Oh my God, this is intense!’
“It’s about knowing you’re not going to please everyone. But then you still read someone saying they wish you were dead and it’s going to ruin your day.
“There were death threats.”
