WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Riverdale season three episode four, ‘The Midnight Club’.
Jughead Jones (played by Cole Sprouse) risks death in his quest to learn more about the mysterious board game Griffins and Gargoyles in episode four of Riverdale.
The once pragmatic lead character lost his mind when he played the fixture with Toni Topaz (Vanessa Morgan), Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch), Sweet Pea (Jordan Connor) and Fangs Fogarty (Drew Ray Tanner).
Betty Cooper (Lil Reinhart) walked in on the group cooped up in Dilton’s bunker playing the game at the end of every the episode, titled The Midnight Club.
“It’s all making sense,” a disillusioned Jughead told his girlfriend. “All of this is becoming clear. I’m at level three. It’s only a matter of time until I ascend, and I get to meet him.”
The shocking scene worried fans, as the youngster seemed way to involved in the game and risked meeting the same fate as deceased Ben and Dilton.
Taking to Twitter to discuss the startling moment, one fan wrote: “WTF! Jughead had clearly lost his mind! Jughead is a Cinonom Roll and must be protected.”(sic)
Another said: “I am p*ssed Jughead started playing Griffins and Gargoyles,” while a third added: “My God, what happened? I fear Jughead and Choni are addicted to the game.”(sic)
A fourth commentator tweeted: “Riverdale so help me, if anything happened to Jughead I will personally come for the writer himself.”
Others were not convinced Jughead would get sucked into the game, with one writing: “They really ended it with Jughead acting like a lunatic. Of all people, we are supposed to believe that Jughead would be obsessed over this dumb game, especially after seeing what it did to other people? He’s smarter than that.”
Suggesting it could just be a bad nightmare, a second person penned: “I have a feeling/theory that the ending wasn’t really real and that it was a dream that Betty had when she went to bed after the talk with Alice [Cooper]. I just have a feeling deep down that Jughead would never actually play the game.”
While it remains a mystery whether Jughead is really addicted to Griffins and Gargoyles, the secret is out about the parents’ involvement in the game in the 80s/early 90s.
Earlier in the show, Betty sat down with her mother, Alice (Mädchen Amick), to get to the bottom of it all and found out why the adults were so against the children playing it.
Alice revealed how FP, Fred, Penelope, Sierra and Hermione all ended up in detention together in their junior year and found Griffins and Gargoyles in a teacher’s desk.
One night, when they stayed back after school to play the game they bumped into Hiram, Marty Mantel and Daryl Doiley, who were dressed up in costume for Griffins and Gargoyles and joined them
At the ascension party, everyone but Alice took a drug called Fizzle Rocks, which made them a little deranged and crazed.
While the others ran around the school, Alice, who was pregnant at the time, ran into a bathroom covered in satanic symbols to throw up and when she left the building she spotted Principal Featherhead walking in.
The next morning, Principal Featherhead was missing and after a few days of searching they found his body in a school closet with symbols carved on the door and blue tint on his lips.
After discovering the teacher’s body everyone decided to destroy the game and part ways, despite never finding out who was responsible for his death.
Riverdale continues next Wednesday on The CW in the US and today on Netflix in the UK.
