The actress appeared on RTE’s The Late Late Show to discuss Claire and Jamie’s (played by Sam Heughan) relationship and their steamy sex scenes.
Host Ryan Tubridy asked the Outlander star: “I read that you said it was female perspective raunchy versus male perspective raunchy. Was that the point you were making?”
“Well I don’t know if raunchy is the right word,” Catriona laughed.
“But you know, I obviously read the first book before I got the show and when I sat down with Ron D. Moore he was very interested in telling a love story and any of the sex scenes from a female perspective.”
She continued: “And also not doing your typical TV sex. So you know, we try to never have sexplanation or whatever they call it when there’s something going on.
“I think it’s an integral part of the story. It’s a love story and it’s about the passion and the chemistry between these two characters.”
Ryan agreed, noting: “And that’s what happens life?”
“Yeah and it’s nice to see it driven by a female perspective and it’s amazing to get a character who is so empowered,” Catriona shared.
“Even for the forties she just seemed like a timeless character and then to put her in situations in the 18th century where it’s such a patriarchal society it was just lovely to examine that dynamic.”
The 38-year-old added that the role of Claire has been a “dream” for her to tackle.
It comes after Catriona and her co-star Sam shared a Q&A with their fans for Valentine’s Day.
Catriona asked: “What is the most romantic thing Claire has done for Jaime?”
“Given him a child,” the Scottish heartthrob replied, which left the brunette beauty stunned: “Aww, that’s really sweet.”
Addressing Jamie’s most romantic gesture for Claire, Sam insisted it was jewellery.
“I think the pearl necklace, it was his mother’s pearl necklace,” Sam, 37 said. “He’s very romantic, he’s always giving her things.”
Outlander season four will return to Amazon Prime and Starz later this year.
