Because We’re Here ~Mohnblume und Blauerose~ casts you as Postal Corps volunteer Elfriede Rauss, a young woman tasked with delivering messages to the young men on the Front Lines. It’s a frightening, unsettling time in this World War I-inspired setting, which makes it an unlikely place to find love. Or maybe love is the most important thing one could find in such brutal times.

Your duty is to help Elfriede in the course of her duties, delivering messages to the various soldiers in the trenches. You’ll meet over a dozen people caught up in this deadly war, hearing their stories and being able to grow closer to them based on the dialogue decisions you make. While romance may be your aim, you’ll still get to know all of these various people, learning to care for them even though death could come for them at any moment.

More trying moments will lead to the game’s version of boss battles, where you’ll need to make quick dialogue decisions about complex subjects in order to argue your way out of danger with both enemies and allies. However, it’s in Because We’re Here‘s connection with its soldiers and their stories that the game personalizes warfare, fighting against the facelessness that comes with death and combat, creating a game of connections in a settling normally reserved for bloodshed and violence. It’s a sobering, yet touching game in that regard, and well worth checking in on it and its future chapters.

Because We’re Here ~Mohnblume und Blauerose~ Act I is available for $ 5.99 on Steam, with three more acts to follow in the future. For more information on the game and developer Studio Elfriede, you can head to the game’s site or follow them on YouTube and Twitter.
