The high-flying Hobart Hurricanes will hope to hold onto their unbeaten record in BBL 08 against the Sydney Sixers in Hobart.

The Hurricanes have been dominant in 2018 and hope to bring that form forward to 2019 with Matthew Wade and D’Arcy Short starring with the bat.

For the Sixers, two-straight wins have the side full of confidence and looking for a huge upset to solidify its place in the top four.

Play starts at 7.15pm.

Slow scoring hurts BBL

Perth Scorchers captain Ashton Turner wants curators to prepare more batter friendly Big Bash wickets, with the competition’s scoring rates the slowest in its history this season.

The Scorchers will return to what they hope will be a fast wicket in Perth against Brisbane on Saturday after being disappointed with a slow Spotless Stadium in their midweek loss to the Sydney Thunder.

Despite the slow pitch, Turner smashed 60 off 36 to almost steal the result.

Competition run-rates are at 7.55 in the eighth edition of the tournament this summer, down on last year’s rate of 8.08 and the peak of 8.42 in 2016-17.

“We’ve been really lucky and almost become accustomed to good cricket wickets in the last few years of the Big Bash and that’s got pros and cons,” Turner said.

“I think it provides really exciting content for the fans; they get to see the ball flying over the rope, crowd catches and the batters getting their way.

“But I think this year it has been a lot closer and the bowlers have dominated, and that is definitely down to the wickets we’ve played on especially.

“You do want to see a contest between bat and ball but I think in general the wickets have been a little more bowler friendly this year than years gone by.”

While Adelaide Oval and Blundstone Arena have produced faster-paced games, Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium has been particularly low scoring with just one total above 120 in two matches there.

Perth’s new Optus Stadium also produced a low-scoring affair in its only match, with the Boxing Day clash between the Scorchers and Adelaide yielding a little more than five per over.

Naturally, some of that is down to the improved skills of bowlers, while spinners occupy seven of the top 10 most economical bowlers of those who’ve sent down 10 or more overs.

It’s a fact likely aided by the slower wickets similar to the one at Spotless Stadium on Wednesday.

“We even saw from the girl’s game before how low and slow the wicket was,” Turner said.

“We do expect that coming here but that was probably on the more extreme end.

“It was probably a little bit disappointing the surface we got; it doesn’t let the batters play exciting cricket and some of the bowlers don’t get to showcase their real talents.”
