Jurgen Klopp: Liverpool can take advantage of Arsenal demise with Champions League run

Victory over Middlesbrough at Anfield tomorrow will see the Reds reach Europe’s elite competition for only the third time in eight seasons.

It will also guarantee the end of the Gunners’ unbroken 18-year run of Champions League football.

Klopp insisted that if Liverpool manage to wrestle the golden ticket from Arsenal’s hands they will not give it up lightly this time – to anyone.

And he maintained his Liverpool are now in a great position to build a European run while others start to crumble.

“If you do it 18 years in a row in the Champions League like Arsenal people say, ‘It’s only the Champions League’. But we would love to be there 19 years in a row from now on,” he said.

“We have the situation for it – that’s an important thing. The feeling is that the mood has changed at the club.”

Klopp’s men could yet sneak past Manchester City into third place if they record a four-goal victory over Boro and City fail to take three points against Watford at Vicarage Road.

The more likely outcome is they beat already-relegaged Boro and finish in fourth place, which will mean a play-off in mid-August to get into the Champions League group stages.

Klopp believes Liverpool could build steadily on that progress if they get there given the increased muscle it would give them both financially and in the transfer market this summer.

“The Champions League is a wonderful competition,” he said.

“You can earn a lot of money there which is money we didn’t have last year.

“We are already in a good position – we are a club without financial problems and we have money to spend. But [in addition to that] we are a really interesting project. Everyone can see from outside.

“It is still the power and size of this club and the base is there, but the mood is different and the perspective has changed.”
