Robson Green, who portrays police office Geordie Keating in the series, admitted that there had been a moment on set when a glaring error was spotted just in time.
It was only thanks to the eagle-eyed accuracy of the director, who had attended Cambridge University, that the mistake was flagged it up to the rest of the cast.
The 52-year-old revealed to media including Express.co.uk: “There was one brilliant moment though. There were goings-on in the quad in Cambridge and we’re doing this scene and [the director] yells: ‘Cut! What the f**king hell are those girls doing in the background? There weren’t female students in the Fifties!’
“But it was genuine. We were all like ‘really?’ My god, there weren’t female students in Cambridge in the Fifties. Wow. He was furious!”
It was not the only memorable moment on set for Robson, who revealed that he was nearly thrown off the set after he made his co-star James Norton – who plays vicar Sidney Chambers – laugh during a serious scene in a graveyard.
His Tommy Cooper jokes left James, 31, in hysterics as they attempted to complete the weighty scenes during a gruelling night shot.
“James starts [laughing] and the director goes, ‘F**king hell, Robson! Get off the set, get off the set! You’re so destructive!’ I went, ‘It’s a wide shot!’,” Robson explained.
The Hexham-born star went on to say: “I swear he told the first assistant to put my costume on and stand next to James because I was a destructive influence.
“We were supposed to wrap at 12, we never completed the scene.”
The third series of the popular show, based on the Grantchester novels by James Runcie, has seen Geordie and Sidney contend with all sorts of cases including a poisoning at a cricket match and murder most foul at an asylum.
In the latest episode of Grantchester, it looked like Sidney could be giving up the clergy for good when he appeared to make something of an exit, however Robson seemed positive about the show and its direction.
“When you’ve got a third series everything is established but not in a cruising kind of way,” he said.
Robson added: “It means we’re confident enough to take risks. It’s darker, it’s grittier.”
Grantchester airs on ITV tonight at 9pm.
