Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud: How to avoid THIS big property renovation mistake

The homes seen on the programme are usually massive projects, which take months to complete, often costing a fortune.

But up and down the country, there are people undertaking their own renovations not quite on the scale of those seen on the show.

Advice from Grand Designs presenter Kevin, however, would probably still be very welcome – and now he has revealed the biggest property mistake people make when doing up their homes.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Kevin, 58, said: “The biggest mistake – not planning. Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.

“One couple in this series had started on their project 14 years ago, it is a long haul endeavour.

“These things are never a year, and you need to spend a long time on them.

“When you get to construction that’s when it gets expensive, so it is best to be prepared and plan properly.

“The problems that happen, tend to happen on site because building is a heap of unknowns, you don’t know whats in the ground, it’s fraught with risk. So why make life complicated by rushing into it?”

Kevin himself has overseen scores of renovations, with every problem imaginable faced by homeowners on the show.

But what would it take for him to refuse to buy a property? From listed buildings to bad design, is there anything that would put him off?

Speaking to Express.co.uk, the TV presenter and designer admitted not much would stop him – but there was one non-negotiable for him when house-hunting.

He revealed: “I can’t believe there is a house anywhere on the planet without some redeeming feature.

“Leaky pipes, a roof that is falling in, whatever it is, it doesn’t matter – you can do it up.

“What you can’t change is what it looks over, its exact location, and what it sits on.

“If it is next to a railway line or a motorway, or situated on boggy ground, it is always going to be a problem.”

Kevin will be appearing at Grand Designs Live from 11th – 15th October 2017 at NEC Birmingham. Visit www.GrandDesignsLive.co.uk for tickets & more info.
