What happened at the end of Good Omens?
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the ending of Good Omens
Good Omens ends with Aziraphale (played by Michael Sheen) and Crowley (David Tennant) drinking in The Ritz while, for the first time, a nightingale sings in Berkeley Square.
This comes after they witness the averting of the apocalypse and survive their own destruction at the hands of the angels and demons with a little help from Agnes Nutter (Josie Lawrence).
For their role in averting the Apocalypse, Crowley is sentenced to being executed by having a bath in holy water, while Aziraphale is told to walk into the fire of Hell.
However, neither of them is destroyed or even harmed by doing this.
This is because they took the advice of Agnes Nutter’s final prophecy, which read: “When all is faced and all is done, ye must choose your faces wisely, for soon enouff you will be playing with fyre.” [sic]
They, therefore, swapped faces, allowing them both to survive their respective executions.
Sitting together on a bench in Bloomsbury after this, they switch bodies back before warning that the greater battle is to come: the battle between Earth and the combined armies of Heaven and Hell.
This is after the Antichrist incarnate Adam Young (Sam Taylor Buck) prevented the Apocalypse.
He used his almighty powers to destroy three of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse by giving his three friends the power to counteract War (Mireille Enos), Pollution (Lourdes Faberes) and Famine (Yusuf Gatewood).
Adam then defeats his father, Satan himself (Benedict Cumberbatch) by turning himself human.
This is not before he reboots the Earth, preventing the actions of the last few days from ever taking place and returning Aziraphale’s bookshop and Crowley’s car back into existence.
The ending of Good Omens also gives happy endings to some of the other major characters.
Madame Tracey (played by Miranda Richardson) and Shadwell (Michael McKean) are finally able to admit their feelings for each other after the former stops her “harlot” ways and the former is certain that she is not a witch after he finds out she only has two nipples.
Newton Pulsifer (Jack Whitehall) and Anathema Device (Adria Arjona), meanwhile, continue their relationship after the latter calls her former her boyfriend during the events at the airfield.
Newton plays his part in the apocalypse by being so useless at computers (as established in an earlier episode) that he breaks the computer that is about to cause the nuclear destruction of the planet.
After these events, courier Giles Baddicombe (Sanjeev Bhaskar) delivers Newton and Anathema a package containing further prophecies from Agnes Nutter.
However, they decide to burn them rather than have their future written out – though the page we see ends with “the saga continues”, meaning Good Omens season two could be coming soon.
Good Omens is streaming on Netflix now.
