Soccer plays very differently when the players can summon tornadoes, turn invisible, or call up a wall in front of the net, but it’s all part of bringing tactical RPG elements to the sport with Ganbare! Super Strikers.

You will be helping a small town Japanese soccer team rise up to become world champions in this sport Anime-inspired genre mixture. This team is anything but ordinary, though, as each player has an array of powers that can be used to change up how the sport plays, calling up elemental powers to confound foes or keep the ball out of your net. Your players will also level up with experience, getting better over time, and can be tweaked with equipables to gain a little more edge over the other team.

Each match, whether in story or various league and tournament modes for those who want a quick play, will be carried out on a grid-like map, with players working their positions out so they can best use their abilities to outmaneuver and out-think the opponent. The game doesn’t just take tactical RPG play, though, as it also offers a little flare with its special attacks, making a spectacle of the powers you use to increase the drama of the sport. It’s a delightful genre mixture at its heart, using elements of both to make a wild sports game and an interesting take on tactical RPGs.

Ganbare! Super Strikers is available for $ 9.99 on Itch.io and Steam. Versions for the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PS4 are projected to release later this year. For more information on the game and developer Rese, you can head to the game’s site or follow them on YouTube and Twitter.
