The episode of the ITV soap began with doctors pronouncing Finn’s (played by Joe Gill) time of death, as Ross (Michael Parr) and Pete Barton (Anthony Quinlan) sobbed into each other’s arms.
Victoria Barton (Isabel Hodgins) then faced the horrific task of breaking the news to Finn’s friends, while his killer mother Emma Barton (Gillian Kearney) was on the run with Moira’s (Natalie J. Robb) baby.
Devastated by the loss, fans took to Twitter to express their sorrow.
“Can’t believe they killed off Finn… got actual tears #Emmerdale,” one person said.
Another viewer commented: “Another amazing @emmerdale I now have a red face from crying going to miss @JoeyGillX you have been amazing #Emmerdale #noreturn.”
A third agreed: “Why am I crying my eyes out at Emmerdale, it’s so sad.”
Fans continued to show their distress at the painful scenes, as one posted: “My emotions are all over the place thanks to #Emmerdale,” while another said: “Amazing episode tonight, gutted for Finn, he was one of the nicest guys on the show.”
Meanwhile, some fans were angry with the soap for killing off their favourite character.
“Well I didn’t expect that #NoReturn #Finn and I don’t mind telling you #Emmerdale I AM NOT HAPPY!” One person tweeted.
The harrowing episode ended with Emma abandoning the baby in the local church and discovering the painful truth that she shot her own son.
Unable to cope with the guilt, she then appeared to be about to commit suicide by jumping off the same bridge she’d pushed her husband James (Bill Ward) from last year.
