While many EastEnders viewers believed he had finally managed to move on from his split with Tanya (played by Jo Joyner) and the death of his daughter Abi (Lorna Fitzgerald), there was much more than met the eye.
In the latest episode, it appeared that the pair were looking to take Abi’s baby home after it transpired the baby had been placed in care.
The pair seemed as though they were keen to set up their own family together with the orphan.
However, after a meeting with a social worker, Rainie (Tanya Franks) was caught out by Jack Branning (Scott Maslen).
He came in unannounced at the end of the discussion, unaware Max (Jake Wood) and Rainie were pretending his house was their own.
Jack was furious but waited for the social worker to leave before raging at Rainie.
He snapped: “I don’t want you anywhere near Abi.”
In new spoiler photos released ahead of this week’s programme, Max and Rainie seem to be hitting the rocks.
The cracks are starting to appear in their sham marriage, especially with the added pressure of them sleeping rough in Maximum Motors.
Fed up of being homeless, Rainie pinches the keys for the Hubbard’s so they can sneakily move in.
But how long will they go unnoticed for?
Vincent (Richard Blackwood) was last seen being bundled into one of villain Aidan Maguire’s (Patrick Bergin) cars.
After a short drive, one of the henchmen held a gun to his head.
The show ended without revealing if the weapon was fired or not – so Vincent could still be alive and also be the one to find Max and Rainie in his home.
It comes as actor Jake revealed Max’s storyline is heading in a new direction.
Speaking to the Sun at the BT Sport Industry Awards 2018, he said: “He’s just got married so there’s a little bit of lightness.
“There’ll be twists and turns long the way.”
He added: “They’ve given Max a different storyline going in a different direction in the next six to eight months.
“It’s brilliant what they’ve come up with and I’m just having great fun doing it.”
