Clearly suspicious, Jane (played by Laurie Brett) began rummaging around for evidence after Steven (Aaron Sidwell) came clean to her and his father Ian (Adam Woodyatt) about having the “deadly disease”.
She eventually found a packet of pills in the drawer, before then finding the packaging in the bin, but the box clearly revealed that the drugs he’d been “taking” were meant for animals.
EastEnders viewers are well aware that it was Steven’s secret lover Abi Branning (Lorna Fitzgerald) – who he has been cheating on his girlfriend Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa) with – that gave him the pills in a bid to make the illness look more “realistic”, but what is going to happen now that Jane finally knows what’s really going on?
Viewers watched on tonight as Jane also saw that Max (Jake Wood) had left a voicemail on Steve’s secret phone, with it looking like she’s going to be discovering all about his sordid revenge plot, as well.
But, will the tables turn and Steven and/or Max now be seeking revenge on Jane? Will she make it out alive?
A teaser trailer has already shown Max telling Steven that he “needs to shut Jane up for good”.
Fans of the BBC soap were quick to take to social media to discuss tonight’s goings-on, with one person posting: “Looks like Jane is on to Steven #EastEnders,” while a second urged: “Go on Jane, rat him out!!! #eastenders.”
A third wrote: “I’m happy Jane twigged something isn’t right with Steven’s story. The medication he’s been taken is for a dog #eastenders.”
This comes as the BBC soap teased an enormous gas explosion that will definitely kill at least one character.
The dramatic scenes will air next week and bosses are keen to keep the name of the unfortunate Albert Square resident a secret.
Will Steven be caught up in the blast or will he make it out alive to reek more havoc?
EastEnders continues tomorrow night at 8pm on BBC One.
