Don’t drink and fly – drunk passengers could face HUGE on-the-spot fines

Drunk passengers hoping to take advantage of the free, on-board service could face huge fines ahead of a new regime to cut back on flight brawls.

The government is considering a number options to reduce the violent and abusive behaviour posed by some drunken passengers.

The change in law could cause all duty-free alcohol to be sold in sealed bags. The law prohibits these being opened until the passenger reaches their final destination.

Anyone caught breaking this rule could face a hefty on-the-spot fine.

These fines may also be applied to passengers that are deemed to be already heavily intoxicated.

Although there are currently rules in place on alcohol consumption, it is not against the law for passengers to drink their own alcohol onboard.

A government report outlining the new aviation strategy, highlighted that 70 per cent of passengers questioned had experienced incidents relating to alcohol on flights.

Out of those, 18 per cent who have flown in the last threes years reported that they had experienced aggressive or drunken behaviour.

According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA) there has been a 50 per cent rise in the number of passengers who have been restrained after showing aggressive behaviour.

One airline reported that 50 per cent of the passenger incidents reported were caused by alcohol consumption.

The report highlights that there are already strict penalties in place for drunken passenger behaviour on an aircraft.

An individual can face up to two years in prison if they are deemed too disruptive and a large fine.

However, it would appear not all passengers are aware of this as drunken behaviour seems to still be on the rise.

Earlier this month a ‘disruptive’ passenger was fined £2,500 after a Ryanair flight was forced to turn back to the UK.

The 45-year-old passenger, Karl Wend, was arrested upon arrival back in the UK leaving his fellow passengers stuck waiting for him to exit the plane.

The father was supposed to be heading to Tenerife on a stag-do with some friends before the situation got out of hand.

Previous flight footage captured the moment a crazed American Airlines passenger delayed his flight after stripping off and chasing staff onto the tarmac.

In a report from Cincinnati.com, the flight was set to take off on from Charlotte airport when the strange behaviour of one of the passengers prevented the plane from taking off.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, a man ran off the plane, onto the tarmac of the Charlotte Douglas International Airport, where he stripped off his shirt.

As the crew try to calm the man, he becomes more agitated and even shows signs of aggressive behaviour. The man was eventually pinned down until police arrived on the scene.
