Set across the UK, US, France, Iran and Lebanon, Deep State tells the story of one man’s journey to avenge his son’s death and uncovering dangerous secrets along the way.
Mark Strong takes the lead as ex-spy Max Easton, who is pulled out of retirement and back into the world of espionage after learning that his son Harry Clarke (Joe Dempsie) has been killed while on a mission.
However, the stakes are far higher than he could have imagined after his family is thrown into harm’s way as he embarks on discovering the truth.
Deep State’s showrunner Matthew Parkhill said of the show: “It’s a dysfunctional family drama set in the midst of an espionage thriller.
“You’ve got elements of the espionage story, you’ve got elements of kinetic action sequences, but at the heart of it all is this story of a man who is trying to get back to a place of simplicity, back to a place of peace, a place of calm.”
Hollywood A-lister Strong is best known for his big screen credits which include Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Zero Dark Thirty, The Imitation Game and Kingsman, among many others.
Speaking about why he returned to television after so long, he explained: “I’d been doing movies and I realised that a lot of the really good writers have gone to television, which is no surprise to anyone.
“But I thought I’d like to do something if the right thing came along and I read a lot of scripts.
“I was in a fortunate position to get offered a lot and this one was the most exciting, it reads really well. I just wanted to find out what was going to happen.”
