Coronation Street: Jane Danson so overwhelmed by fame she hid inside and 'put on a stone'

The Leanne Battersby actress joined the soap in 1997 at the age of just 19 and initially was wary of how the public would react to her loud-mouthed character.

After 20 years on the Cobbles, Jane, 38, has opened up about the pressures of being catapulted to fame at such a young age.

She said in a recent interview: “I couldn’t cope with it. I had this amazing job and, by 19, my own little house. But I just sat inside.

“I’d be scared of someone throwing a drink in my face. Coping with the attention was terrifying.”

Instead of going out and partying like many of her peers, Jane opted to stay in and indulge her sweet tooth.

The mother-of-two added to The Mirror: “So I just sort of stayed at home, ate biscuits and put on a stone.

“It was good in one sense. You are young and earning money, there are parties, drink and other things you might have got involved with.

“So my relationship with my barrel of biscuits was pretty OK really!”

Jane recently confessed that being involved in Michelle Connor’s baby death storyline was like “therapy” for her, having suffered a miscarriage herself.

She told Loose Women that working with Kym Marsh, who also lost a baby, finally allowed her to open up about her experience.

“In a way it helped me because I’d never talked about it before. It was like therapy”, she explained.

“And Kym was very supportive, even though she’d been through that sad experience herself.”

Coronation Street continues Monday at 7.30pm on ITV.
