Chris Cornell dead: Looking back at his James Bond theme, Casino Royale’s You Know My Name

The rocker died suddenly after performing a show in Detroit on Wednesday evening.

In a statement to The Associated Press, it was said his death was “sudden and unexpected.”

Apart from being lead vocalist and songwriter for Soundgarden and Audioslave, he is best known for his theme song, You Know My Name from Casino Royale.

The hit track opened Daniel Craig’s 2006 reboot and appeared on Cornell’s second solo album Carry On.

Cornell wrote the song with David Arnold, who has composed five Bond films and will conduct

Since the new Bond film was introducing Craig’s grittier and emotional deep Bond, producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson chose Cornell as a strong male singer.

As Arnold and Cornell wrote You Know My Name, they took into account Bond’s inexperience as a secret agent, alongside his newly emphasised characteristics.

When it came to accepting the job the singer admitted that while a fan of Sean Connery, he hadn’t been that keen on the Pierce Brosnan era.

However it was Craig’s casting that convinced him to take the role, and enjoyed visiting the Prague set where he was impressed by Casino Royale’s emotional content.

When asked what the biggest influences were from other Bond themes, he said Tom Jones’ Thunderball and Paul McCartney’s Live and Let Die.

He also admitted he didn’t put the film’s title in the song because he “couldn’t imagine it fitting into a song lyric that would come out of my mouth”.
