And in the opening scenes of the show, each finalist discussed their upbringing and what cooking meant to them.
John discussed his personal story, and viewers saw him breaking down in tears as he spoke fondly of his mother and honestly of the dark time in his life, which he escaped through cooking.
“When I got the call from MasterChef I felt like, you know, this was somebody helping me out,” he began to explain. “It was perfect timing.
Viewers took to Twitter to express their views on John’s story and many were touched by his emotional honesty.
“John Partridge just made me cry! He has so much strength and I’m so glad he is now sober and cooking has helped him! #JohnToWin #CelebrityMasterChef #MasterChef,” one wrote.
Another added: “Really moved by your story John. Would love to see you win so fingers crossed #CelebrityMasterChef #JohnPartridge.”
“Absolutely desperate for @mustbejp to win #CelebrityMasterChef what moving words! Well done for getting out of your downward spiral,” a third tweeted.
“Omg! John Partridge’s bio film is so emotional. Got me in tears! #CelebrityMasterChef,” one viewer explained.
A fifth said: “@mustbejp what an honest and emotional story John, so brave of u and well done on making it though the dark times! #CelebrityMasterChef.”
It comes after John explaining how his: “Mum passed away, and [he] just completely broke down.
“My life was rapidly spinning out of control. It was. I was spinning out of control with substance abuse, and alcohol.
“I would get up in the morning and go to the supermarket and I’d buy some groceries – can’t believe I’m telling you this,” he added whilst wiping away the tears.
“I would stand here and I would just cook all day. So that I wouldn’t give myself that minute in the day to think about something else.
“And that’s what cooking did for me. And you know, I’ve been clean for seven months, sober for 185 days and you know it’s amazing,” John confirmed.
As for the competition, he revealed: “This MasterChef experience, without sounding ridiculous has been healing for me.
“When I cook things me and my family enjoy, it makes me emotional, because it’s like a living memory. [But it’s] given me a real insight to me, and I’m thankful.” (sic).
John is best known for his role in EastEnders as Christian Clarke, where he featured in a high profile gay storyline for eight years.
He also played a major role in Cats the musical on the West End, as well as Chicago and Starlight Express.
