Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden were in charge of the Marvel superhero smash, and Fleck has revealed that Lashana Lynch’s audition left him frantically wiping his eyes in the corner of the room. Lynch has been praised for her performance as Danvers’ friend and co-pilot Maria Rambeau; who plays a massive part in Carol Danvers’ quest to remember her life before she was with the Kree. It seems Lynch was an obvious choice for the part after the success of her tryout.
Speaking to Empire, Fleck said: “When she auditioned for the part she read with Brie [Larson], and literally made me cry during her audition.
“It takes a lot to make me cry, and I was hiding in the corner trying to wipe my eyes.
“I talked to her about it later on, and she said, ‘You know what? Even if I didn’t get it, that felt good.'”
Sure enough, she did of course get the part.
Maria pops up briefly in Carol’s memories, before the latter tracks her down.
But in an earlier version of the script, Maria and Carol would have been seen long before Carol lost her memories.
“There was a whole Top Gun-style sequence that we were even planning to shoot for a while,” Fleck said in the same interview.
“Even though it was an awesome introduction to Carol and Maria Rambeau – and I think it would have been fun for the audience to meet them on Earth as humans – the problem with that is the audience would be so far ahead of the story.”
