BBC News: ‘Absolutely disgraceful’ Naga Munchetty enrages viewers with guest gaffe

It unfolded as the BBC Breakfast presenter discussed what would be coming up next on the programme.

At the end of the show, Naga and Dan Walker were due to interview Welsh singer Elan Parry.

However, viewers weren’t happy with how Naga pronounced her name.

Naga’s stress on the letter E appeared rile up some of those watching at home.

Those angered by the annunciation of the Welsh name took to Twitter to vent.

“Is there some rule that the @BBCBreakfast team have to just not bother even trying to pronounce Welsh names? First Jerraint, now Eelan @elancatrinparry absolutely disgraceful,” one declared.

Another said: “C’mon @BBCBreakfast; you’ve got some time before Elan comes on, in which to pronounce her name correctly. It really isn’t that difficult. Diolch.”

A fan said: “@BBCBreakfast please learn how to pronounce names such as your guest Elan Parry.”

“@BBCBreakfast f.a.o. Naga Elan is pronounced like ElleAnn not EelAnn,” a fourth wrote.

“@BBCBreakfast Welsh names are not difficult to pronounce. Elan, El as in bell (without the ‘b’), an as in tan (without the ‘t’). Please get them right,” a fifth pleaded.

A sixth chimed in: “@BBCBreakfast El-an, not E-lan.”

The Welsh singer appeared on the sofa to discuss her career after being signed up to Decca records earlier this year.

The 15-year-old also appeared on ITV programme This Time Next Year back in May.

Elan told Davina McCall she would land a record deal within a year, which she managed to achieve.

Her BBC Breakfast interview came after Dan and Naga had appeared with some snakes on the sofa.

In light of some unusual snake sightings in the country, the show held a segment about the reptiles.

However, Dan openly confessed that he was terrified of the creatures and made his discomfort known.

Those watching at home couldn’t help but laugh at the 41-year-old’s body language.

“@BBCBreakfast Utter terror on the sofa! Poor Dan, visibly sweating,” one fan exclaimed.

“If Dan moves any further he’ll fall off the @BBCBreakfast sofa,” another said.

A third admitted: “@BBCBreakfast laughing at how uncomfortable Dan looks #SorryDan.”

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.
